Indian cricket great Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at young batsman Shubman Gill for throwing away his wicket on Day 2 of the first Test against England in Hyderabad. Gill, who resumed his overnight score of 14, caught it at mid-wicket on 23 after a rash shot against the cherry spinner. He played 66 deliveries and hit just two boundaries, as he struggled to rotate the strike. Gavaskar angered Gill over his shot selection and said there was no need for him to do that.

Gavaskar made the comments while commentating on Day 2.

“What kind of shot was he looking to play? You can understand if he was looking to play it in the air, but it was just a poorly executed drive. He did all the hard work and then played a shot like that,” Gavaskar was heard saying in the commentary.

KL Rahul scored 86 and Ravindra Jadeja approached a half-century on Friday to take India’s lead to 63 runs at Tea on Day 2.

The hosts were 305/9 with Jadeja on 45 and wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat on nine at tea in Hyderabad.

Rahul’s anchoring 86 ended with a big push off a long jump by Test debutant Tom Hartley, which landed in the palms of Rehan Ahmed at mid-wicket.

It was Hartley’s second strike of the day after Shubman Gill.

Rahul’s exit brought an end to a 65-run stand with left-hander Jadeja standing firm and maintaining the attack to entertain a crowd of over 25,000 fans taking advantage of the national Republic Day holiday.

England struck in the third over after lunch when Shreyas Iyer holed out deep to mid-wicket for 35 off Ahmed.

India overnight lost batting duo Yashasvi Jaiswal and Gill within the first hour of play after resuming play at 119-1.

Left-handed Jaiswal added four to his overnight 76 with a boundary off the second ball, but was dismissed after bowling the fourth ball of the day to spinner Joe Root, who jumped high to catch it.

On Day 1, England played their attacking ‘Bazball’ style of cricket and elected to bat at the start of the five-match series and made 246, courtesy of captain Ben Stokes’ 70.
