Goodbye Barbie. Whoopi Goldberg offers her take on the hit film’s exclusion from some of the top categories at the 2024 Oscars.
During a discussion about “The view” On Wednesday, Goldberg and co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin, Joy Behar, Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin discussed “Barbie” star Ryan Gosling’s reaction to the lack of Oscar nominations for his co-star Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig. Gosling was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Ken in the fantasy comedy.
The conversation sparked a lively debate about when films are rejected for recognition in the industry, leading Goldberg to reject the notion of rejection altogether.
“Not everyone wins,” Goldberg said. “They’re not snubs, and that’s what I want to point out. And it’s not the elites. It’s the entire Academy Awards family who votes on the best picture nominations.”
“Barbie” received a total of eight nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, competing for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best original song, best costume design and best production design, as well as best actor and actress. distribution.
Robbie, who is credited as the film’s producer, was completely shut out in the acting categories.
“You don’t get everything you want,” Goldberg said. “That’s the thing to keep in mind. Not everyone gets an award, and it’s subjective. Movies are subjective. Movies you love may not be loved by the people who vote.”

In a statement shared with several outlets, including CNN and The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling expressed his disappointment that Robbie and Gerwig did not receive recognition in the best actress and best director categories.
“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this historic and globally celebrated film,” Gosling said. “No recognition would be possible for anyone for the film without their talent, courage and genius. To say I am disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”
