After almost six years, the end of Fox’s “X-Men” movies and an acquisition by Disney, deadpool has finally returned and arrived in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first trailer for “Deadpool and Wolverine” was shown on Sunday at the 2024 Super Bowl.
It is not only Ryan Reynolds‘ Merc With a Mouth returns, it will also bring back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who fans last saw die in the 2017 farewell film, “Logan.”
The trailer shows the Time Variance Authority, the administrators of the multiverse last seen in “Loki” season 2, kidnap Deadpool while he celebrates his birthday and bring him to the MCU. Calling himself “Marvel Jesus,” Deadpool promises to bring his R-rated jokes and fourth-wall-breaking antics to Disney’s squeaky-clean brand. Wolverine’s face is not shown, but he can be seen from behind, and Deadpool confronts him at the end of the trailer, but only his shadow is shown.
Production in “Deadpool 3” paralyzed for four months due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which caused it to be moved from May 3 to July 26.
The first “Deadpool” followed the antihero who sought revenge against Ajax (Ed Skrein), the man who turned him into a mutant and left him disfigured. The second installment focused on Deadpool organizing the X-Force team to fight time-traveling soldier Cable (Josh Brolin).
When it was launched in 2018, “Deadpool 2” broke records by raising $18.6 million in its premiere at the North American box office. Two years before, “Deadpool” experienced similar success and debuted domestically. with $132.4 million, a record for an R-rated film.
As for what audiences can expect from the film next year, “Deadpool 3” director Shawn Levy wrote an essay for Esquire, revealing that he included a tribute to the “Star Wars” franchise in the upcoming film.
“In a key scene in the movie, I told my action and stunt team, ‘Guys, this is the Jedi moment.’ “I pulled up that Vader and Luke scene on my phone and went back to studying how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the tempo,” Levy wrote. “The avid ‘Star Wars’ fan will see the shot from my film ‘Deadpool’ that was inspired by a moment I saw in a movie theater decades ago. That is a memory forever. And that is a treasure.”
“The experience I’m currently having with Marvel on ‘Deadpool’ shows me firsthand that it really is possible to feel empowered and personal by making a movie within a universe that is bigger than any movie,” he continued. “My movie ‘Deadpool’ is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] And I was hopeful when we started.”
