Mo’Nique says she would be Melissa McCarthy if she were white

Mo’Nique isn’t done criticizing Hollywood.


The Oscar winner, 56, has criticized the lack of equal opportunities in show business, saying she should have the same career path as her white counterparts.


“If I were a white woman, do you know what my name would be? Melissa McCarthy,” Mo’Nique said during a wide-ranging interview on Shannon Sharpe Shay Shay Club this week’s podcast. “If I were a white woman, my name would be Melissa McCarthy. Same history. Five-year sitcom in syndication. The opportunities are not the same.”

Black women and the community in general “are judged with a different stick,” she added. Her comments came in response to Sharpe’s observation that she should be as commercially successful as people like Dave Chappelle and other stars who have emerged from the stand-up scene.
