Universal

March 8, 2024 (WIDELY)

Opening weekend range: $44 million-$54 million

WEEKEND ADVANTAGES:

  • As the first high-profile animated, family-friendly release to hit theaters since December Migration and Wonkafamilies are expected to attend kung fu panda 4 in healthy numbers. Pre-sales are ahead of The trolls unite at the same point before launch. A partial PLF print will also be useful.
  • Dune: Part Two stood out with an $82.5 million debut last weekend, putting it at the upper end of expectations. Its excellent reception and PLF strength should boost staying power in the chase weekends going forward, as the sequel’s Rotten Tomatoes critic and audience scores sit at 93 percent and 95 percent, respectively.
  • Angel Studios returns with another strong pre-sale in Cabrini that should highlight the distributor’s core religious audience.

Dune: Part Two

Warner Bros.

Second weekend range: $40 million-$47 million

CONS OF THE WEEKEND:

  • As a 16-year-old franchise that has also been spun into several television series and specials, Kung Fu Panda as a brand is certainly a candidate for some diminished returns, as some of today’s kid audiences may not be as familiar with the popular series as those who grew up during the IP’s peak in 2008 and 2011.
  • If there are any precautions when evaluating Dune: Part TwoThe film’s expected staying power is primarily realized in an over-reliance on adult male audiences (59 percent male and 64 percent over 25 on opening weekend) and PLF formats (48 percent). This last statistic could continue to increase demand for screenings if casual audiences expect a more optimal way to experience the film.
